Interview with The Manchester Evening News
- How did you first become interested in art?
I first became interested in art as a thirteen year-old, when I began to a read monthly art magazine.
- What is your background? (Studies, any major shows/exhibitions/claims to fame)
I received both my bachelor’s and master’s degree in sculpture at Hongik University in Seoul, debuted in 1999 and had solo exhibitions in Seoul, LA, and Beijing and numerous group exhibitions at galleries and museums in Tokyo, Nantes, Paris, Milan, Bologna, Amsterdam, Copenhagen, Berlin, Stuttgart , Santiago, and London.
- What is your work about?
From a big perspective, many of my works are about the sculpture itself, but I also get influenced by advertisements and everyday life.
- What work did you exhibit in Manchester for the Asia Triennial?
Deodorant Type works called Yamaha and Control are being exhibited.
- What kind of reactions do your subjects have to your work? Do they think the sculptures are realistic? Scary? Funny?
All the reactions just mentioned are all definitely one of the reactions I get.
In my opinion, my models are people who deviated from themselves in a delicate way.
People understand my work to a certain extent when they come across it at a gallery or a museum, but it doesn’t seem to be the same way in everyday ordinary life. A pregnant woman from the neighborhood where my studio is located complained about my work, calling it a frightening and distasteful mannequin. I was a bit hurt by that, haha.
- What do you think of the Asia Triennial? Have you seen some interesting work? Where?
I felt that many of the works reflected political and social issues both directly and indirectly, and I personally found Wooram Choi’s work interesting.
- Did you make it to Manchester for the opening of the exhibition? Did you get chance to look at any galleries? What did you think?
Despite the fact that all the works are from the Asia, I was able to recognize the distinct features and characteristics depending on the different countries and regions.
- What artists inspire you?
Lately, it’s been the ancient sculptors. It depends on the occasion, but the ancient sculptures greatly interest me.
- What new artists are worth checking out?
There seem to be many artists worth checking out in Korea at the moment. If I were to choose, it would be Hyungkoo Lee, and Suejin Chung.
- Is there anything extra you want to say?

- 처음 어떻게 미술에 관심을 갖게 되었나?
열세살 때 쯤부터 미술월간잡지를 보기 시작하면서 관심을 갖게 되었다.
- 본인의 배경 및 소개(전공, 주요전시 등)를 해달라.
서울에 있는 홍익대학교와 대학원에서 조각을 전공했고, 1999년 데뷔해서 서울과 LA, 베이징등에서 개인전을 가졌고, 도쿄, 낭트, 파리, 밀라노, 볼로냐, 암스텔담, 코펜하겐, 베를린, 슈투트가르트, 산티아고, 런던 등의 미술관과 갤러리에서 그룹전을 가졌다.
- 작품은 무엇에 대한 것인가?
크게 본다면 조각 그 자체에 관한 것이 많고, 광고나 일상에 영향을 많이 받기도 한다.
- 맨체스터 아시아 트라이엔날에서 어떤 작품을 전시하였나?
야마하와 컨트롤이라는 데오도란트타입의 작품들이 전시되고 있다.
- 작품의 대상들은 작품에 대해 어떤 종류의 반응을 보이나? 조각이 현실적이다? 무섭다? 혹은 웃기다?
지금 언급한 모든 내용들이 반응 중에 하나다.
모델이 되었던 사람들은 내가 보기엔 미묘하게 어긋나있다.
미술관이나 갤러리에서 내 작품을 만나면 어느 정도는 이해해 주겠지만, 일상에선 그렇지 않은 듯하다. 엊그제 작업실이 있는 동네에서 무섭고, 혐오스러운 마네킹이라고 어떤 임산부의 항의를 받아서 약간 상처받았다. 하하.
- 아시아 트라이엔날에 대한 소감은? 흥미로운 작업들은 보았나? 어디서?
정치적이고 사회적인 이슈들이 직간접적으로 나타나는 작업들이 많았다고 생각되며, 개인적으로는 최우람의 작업이 흥미있다.
- 맨체스터 전시 오프닝 때 있었나? 근처 갤러리 둘러볼 기회는 있었는지? 어떻게 생각하였나?
같은 아시아라 하더라도 국가나 지역에 따라 확연히 다른 어떤 특징을 느낄 수 있었다.
- 영감을 주는 아티스트는?
요즘은 고전조각가들, 때에 따라 다르지만 고대와 고전의 조각들은 나에게 많은 흥미를 일으킨다.
- 요즘 주목할만한 새로운 작가는?
한국에는 현재 주목할만한 작가들이 꽤 있다고 보여진다. 몇 명을 꼽자면 이형구와 정수진.
