About The Work

‘Deodorant Type’ is a series often described as “photo-sculpture,” in which the artist photographs a subject—whether human figures, animals, or everyday objects—from all angles and then cuts and adheres the developed images onto a Styrofoam structure to construct the final work. Although the result assumes the recognizable form of a realistic sculpture, its surface is in fact composed of meticulously joined photographic fragments, thereby fundamentally transforming the traditional methods and material conventions of sculpture, long grounded in bronze, stone, or wood.

In this series, volume undeniably exists, yet unlike conventional sculpture the interior remains lightweight and hollow; within a single structure, the flatness of photography intersects with the spatial presence of sculpture, allowing the viewer to experience both plane and volume simultaneously. Sculpture is no longer perceived as a dense and weighty mass but rather as an image-constructed exterior, where the surface is a printed skin and the interior functions merely as a supporting framework.

Ultimately, ‘Deodorant Type’ redefines the physical ontology of sculpture by fusing photography and sculptural practice, shifting the viewer’s point of perception from form and mass toward surface and image. Remarkably original within the trajectory of contemporary art history, the series emerges from a profound understanding of contemporary art discourse, the technical and perceptual properties of the camera, and the formal language of sculpture, synthesized into a singular and rigorous body of work.
